On Beyond Cancer

My life with metastatic breast cancer

Muscle pain in my hip August 7, 2013

I’ve been having muscle pain around my left hip, that has gradually increased over the last few weeks.  It started out as just annoying, so I tried the usual heating pads, hot baths, stretching, and ibuprofen.  In the last week or so those haven’t been enough.  I’m pretty sure that it’s not a bone pain because it feels different.  I tried doing yoga thinking that might help and I wasn’t able to sit cross legged on the floor. So I had an appointment with the radiation oncologist yesterday.  Since I haven’t been doing much activity lately, I figured the problem might be a long term side effect of radiation.  The doctor says no, but that is his usual answer.  He thinks that I have inflammation in my muscles  (caused by radiation?).  I also read that there is something called radiation fibrosis where proteins build up in areas that have been radiated causing this kind of pain.  I am having an MRI of my hip/pelvis next Wednesday so that should give us a better idea of what is happening.  The doctor said I may need physical therapy. I’m hoping he prescribes massage,  🙂 but that would be too good to be true, right?

If they give you a prescription for a massage, make sure it includes the neck and back muscles too. Why not?:)

  2. So physical therapy usually includes some massage, as well as some time with ice and heat. So its not all bad. Plus it counts as exercise, double bonus!

Wishing you the best at your doctor’s appointment. XO

Massage sure would be good–crossed fingers! Glad you are so proactive about your problems and solutions, Karissa. We pray that you can find peace in the meantime. I’m looking forward to visiting you this weekend and giving you a (gentle) bear hug! 😉 Love, Jennifer 🙂

    Good Luck!
